What's At Stake With The Special Election
"If Schwarzenegger loses the four measures he has been promoting, analysts say it will undo the populist mystique that gave him a special power during his first year in office. Gone will be the notion that the celebrity Republican governor has such natural appeal he can take his cause directly to the people when Democrats in the Legislature refuse to do his bidding.

The special election campaign and the months-long struggle that preceded it have already inflicted grave damage to Schwarzenegger's standing with the public. For the first time in his political career, he has had to contend with serious opposition, this time from unions that have spent millions on TV ads to drive down his popularity."
